100 rabbis sound the alarm: Europe on the verge of a Jewish exodus

More than a hundred rabbis from different corners of Europe have signed a collective warning to the leadership of the European Union. Their message is harsh and direct — Jews feel defenseless, and the exodus from Europe is no longer an abstract scenario. “It’s no longer fantasy,” they write.

The letter is addressed to the presidents of the European Commission, the European Council, and the European Parliament — those who determine the continent’s policy. The rabbis talk about how, after October 7, 2023, antisemitism has reached levels Europe has not seen in decades. In Jewish families, the same question is increasingly being asked: “Do we have a future here?”

So far, the response has been just words. Statements of solidarity, routine condemnations of incidents. But the rabbis are utterly frank: this is no longer enough.

They describe life under pressure. Attacks and threats have become part of everyday life. Synagogues operate under heightened security. Jewish schools exist in an atmosphere of constant vigilance. What recently seemed like a theoretical possibility — the mass departure of Jews from Europe — today turns into a practical planning issue.

Marina Rosenberg Koritny, Head of the WZO Department for the Promotion of Aliyah, does not mince words:

“The rabbis’ call is an SOS. And without exaggeration: European Jews feel abandoned. We cannot close our eyes — if European leaders do not take real, not declarative, measures, the exodus will become a fact. For Israel, this means direct responsibility: to be ready to accept new repatriates, help them settle in, support them — both morally and in practice. Ignoring this alarm signal is impossible.”

History knows examples when such warnings were ignored. Today, Europe faces a choice: either take measures that will truly protect Jewish communities or witness their departure.

The question is no longer whether the exodus is possible. The question is how much time is left to prevent it. And for those who decide they can no longer wait, Israel is already extending a hand — as to those returning home.
