Unity for the future: why supporting the diaspora is critically important for Israel

Author: Head of the World Zionist Organization Department for the Promotion of Aliyah Marina Rosenberg Koritny.

A pivotal moment has arrived in the history of the Jewish people. The events of October 7, 2023, have forever changed the perception of the security of the Jewish state. On this dark day, Israel faced the most massive and bloody terrorist attack in its history. 1,163 people were brutally killed by terrorists, and 251 individuals, from infants to the elderly, were taken hostage and forcibly taken to the Gaza Strip. The tragedy has shown that threats to the existence of the Jewish state are as real as ever before.

The response of the international community has been no less alarming. Organizations like the UN, as well as a number of activists and intellectuals, under the guise of humanitarian slogans, are effectively justifying the actions of terrorists. In the media and social networks, Israel is increasingly portrayed in a distorted light, and antisemitism is gaining strength, evoking associations with dark pages of the past.

In such times, the solidarity of the Jewish diaspora with Israel becomes not just important — it is indispensable. Throughout the centuries, unity has been our support, and today it takes on new meaning. Israel, like a beacon, lights the way for the Jewish people, and the diaspora is its foundation, strengthening the light of this beacon. A strong Jewish state supports the confidence of the diaspora, and an active diaspora lends resilience to Israel.

Jewish communities around the world have significant resources: influence in politics, the ability to convey the truth in an era of disinformation, economic support. In a context where the narrative is shaped not so much by facts as by their interpretation, the role of the diaspora in defending objectivity is especially great. This does not require grand gestures — just consistent efforts to refute false accusations and promote a real picture of events.

Supporting Israel today is not only an emotional impulse but also a practical task. Participating in the public life of their countries, cooperating with pro-Israel initiatives, developing cultural and educational ties — each such step matters. This is not a matter of loud declarations, but a matter of calm, purposeful work.

The connection between Israel and the diaspora is mutual strengthening. A thriving Israel remains a guarantee of security and dignity for Jews worldwide. In turn, an active diaspora serves as a reliable support for the state in difficult times. We face a choice: either to strengthen this connection through joint efforts or to leave it to the mercy of circumstances.

Today, everyone, regardless of where they live, can contribute. There are no actions too modest, no support insignificant. Together, we can ensure a future for Israel and the entire Jewish people based on stability and mutual understanding. The time for this is now. The responsibility is ours collectively.
