When objectivity becomes a threat: how the UN gets rid of employees suspected of sympathizing with Israel

The UN positions itself as an international organization that protects the principles of justice and equality. However, in reality, an objective view of the Arab-Israeli conflict, and even more so, suspicions of sympathies towards Israel often become reasons for the persecution and dismissal of employees. The examples of two cases make it clear that the UN does not tolerate those who refuse to play along with the anti-Israel narrative.

Case 1: Sarah Muscroft — Fired for Condemning “Islamic Jihad”

In August 2022, Sarah Muscroft, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Palestine, openly condemned the actions of the “Islamic Jihad” militants. In her statement on Twitter, she called the rocket attacks on Israel unacceptable and criticized the group for provoking conflict, endangering the lives of civilians. These words sparked outrage among Palestinian circles, after which Muscroft was removed from her position. The official reason was “her statements did not align with the agency’s policy,” however, many observers saw this as an attempt to suppress objective assessments of the situation.

Case 2: Alice Wairimu Nderitu — Fired for Refusing to Recognize the Genocide of Palestinian Arabs

In November 2024, Alice Wairimu Nderitu, the UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, was relieved of her duties after she refused to classify Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip as genocide. Nderitu, known for her integrity and professionalism, emphasized that the use of the term “genocide” requires strict adherence to international legal standards. According to her, the incorrect application of this term can undermine trust in international law and devalue real cases of genocide. Despite her arguments and years of experience, her contract was not renewed. Observers link this decision to pressure from anti-Israel circles within the UN.

Such situations indicate that the UN’s internal standards are inconsistent and biased in favor of anti-Israel narratives. This is not only a matter of justice but also of trust in a global organization whose actions should be based on the principles of impartial peacekeeping and humanity. A situation where objectivity is punished has a destructive impact on the world community’s trust in the organization.
